Too much hassle to babysit the brisket? Life can be busy, we get it, you’re not alone - this is the reason the BBQ controller was invented. These clever gadgets are simple PID controllers that are used to monitor and adjust the temperature of your BBQ smoker - remotely!
So, how do they work?
Put simply, they work by measuring the temperature on the grill of your barbecue using a probe, they then adjust the airflow by increasing air to the fire to make it hotter, or slowing the air down to cool the cooking temperature. Now, they can do this in a couple of ways, but most of them use a simple fan system to blow air through a vent near the fire or a hole you drill.

BBQ Guru alone have 3 models, then there’s other brands like FlameBoss, Fireboard, Tappecue, Smobot and of course the ProQ Smartfire. These all work in similar ways with different features, so it’s easy to find something to suit you. Our experience with BBQ has brought us into contact with most of these brands, and for almost every BBQ out there including ceramic cookers, ugly drum smokers, and especially our ProQ BBQ Smokers we’d recommend the Smartfire. We loved their temperature controller so much we went on to co-brand with them in 2019, and for us it all came down to two things: Simplicity and Features.

The Smartfire unit itself has no screen, or buttons, it simply plugs in to a USB power supply (same plug as most phones) and connects to an App on your phone, it can use either WiFi or Bluetooth to do this, which means it’s easy to use even if you’re away from home. The Smartfire can use 4 probes at a time (3 for food, 1 for the cooker temp). The Smartfire App lets you pick what meat you’re cooking on each probe, and how you’d like it, and will alert you when your food is cooked!
SHOP SMARTFIRE NOWThe Smartfire won’t top your fire up or wrap your ribs for you, but it will let you know if the smoker temperature is dropping, or spiking for any reason so you can go check it out. It’s almost completely automated BBQ, which helps when you’re short of time, too busy with other things or simply fancy an afternoon snooze whilst the Smartfire watches the pulled pork for you.
